Third trimester kicks off on Sunday

I'm so excited to be two-thirds done with pregnancy. Don't get me wrong, it's been a great experience so far, but I'm looking forward to meeting our baby girl (and to having a nice glass of wine or two!). It's hard to believe that I only have 2 months of work left before I'm off for maternity leave. It's very hard to concentrate on work what with baby girl rolling around or kicking every half hour and the impending leave, and of course the birth!

I took the gestational diabetes test this morning. I chose the orange glucola drink because I actually like orange soda every now and again. It really wasn't that bad at all. If you hate sweet drinks, I guess you'd probably hate this, too, but if cola and juice are among your favorites, you probably wouldn't mind this little test. The worst part was waiting around at Kaiser for an hour after drinking it. I did have my 28 week appointment during that time, but for the first time ever, the nurse was actually on time and saw me in less than 20 minutes. She checked the baby's heart rate and my uterus size (by measuring my tummy) and said everything was normal. My weight was up to 155 lb, which is 5 lb more than my last appointment 3 weeks ago, but last night was pizza and cookie night (pizza and beer for Lawrence :). I'm sure I'll be down a pound or two tomorrow. The nurse also gave me a kick card and a birth plan to fill out. Since I have the iPhone Baby Bump app, I don't need to fill in the card - I just have to remember to run the kick counter part of the app every night starting Monday. On the birth plan, I've gotten conflicting opinions on whether to create one or not. In "The Best Birth" by Sarah McMoyler, the author says not to create a birth plan because then you feel bad if you can't stick to it during labor. Other books, and Kaiser, recommend that you fill one out so that you at least put a stake in the ground for how you'd like things to go. I suppose as long as I keep an open mind and remember to be flexible on birth day (or two!), I can probably work out a birth plan ahead of time.

This weekend we have our second and last Baby Makes Three class (on Saturday), and we're also planning to get started on prepping baby's room for paint. Trever's friend, Kimberly, wants to help with the room, so I need to get in touch with her and see if she can come by this weekend to look at paint samples. I can't wait to get started on it!

  1. Elizabeth-
This may sound really lame, but my birth plan was to listen to my nurses and doctors and do what was best for me and my baby!!! I knew that I wasn't ready for an epidural when I checked into the hospital... but as things progressed I realized that I didn't need to be superman (thanks, Mom for this advice!) and I wanted to have energy for when Lindsey arrived!! I decided that I was new to this whole "birth" thing, and the nurses and doctors were there to do what was best for me and the baby... so I let them lead...and it worked out perfectly!!! All I can advise it that labor and delivery is SOOOOO different for everyone, so be prepared to change your "plan" at least once!! :)

  2. Oh I loved "The Best Birth!" I totally followed her advice. I had a birth plan in my head and Keith and I talked about how we would ideally like things to go but we didn't put anything down on paper. I love her mantra of healthy baby, healthy mom and how you get there doesn't matter. I had to be on an IV and fetal monitor the entire time I was in the hospital because of a lot of bleeding but it didn't really matter because I got the epidural pretty soon after I got checked into my labor and delivery room. It wasn't really my "plan" but it worked out just fine. Epidurals are wonderful, wonderful things.
